CYNDI DEBOCK INTRODUCTION
RICHARD MCKAY REMARKS
AUGUST 11, 2009

IT IS AN HONOR FOR ME TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO INTRODUCE CYNDI DEBOCK TO YOU ON BEHALF OF THE ROTARY GLOBAL HISTORY FELLOWSHIP.

BUT BEFORE I DO, LET ME TELL YOU A LITTLE BUT ABOUT THIS FASCINATING FELLOWSHIP AND HER INVOLVEMENT WITH US.

IN THE FALL OF 2000, I HEARD ABOUT AN IDEA OF Jack M. B. Selway’S TO PUT THE HISTORY OF THE FIRST 50 ROTARY CLUBS ON THE INTERNET. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED HIM SINCE ROTARY STARTED HERE IN CHICAGO AND I THOUGHT THIS CLUB SHOULD BE REPRESENTED. I ASKED HIM HOW HE DETERMINED IT SHOULD BE THE FIRST 50 CLUBS. HE SAID, “BECAUSE MY CLUB IN PUEBLO CO IS #43.

THREE OTHER ROTARIANS ALSO CAUGHT ON TO THE IDEA. THEY ARE PDG EDDIE BLENDER (D5470), PDG GERI APPLE (WICHITA KS #30) AND MATS INGEMANSON (NEW YORK CITY #6.)

BY THE TIME WE WERE APPROACHING THE RI CONVENTION IN SAN ANTONIO IN JUNE OF 2001, WE DECIDED TO INVITE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE FIRST 50 CLUBS TO A CASH BAR COCKTAIL PARTY, WHICH I GUARANTEED.

WE WERE OVERWHELMED WITH THE RESPONSE AND BEFORE WE LEFT FOR HOME WE DECIDED WE SHOULD EXPAND THIS IDEA TO THE FIRST 100 CLUBS. WITHIN A FEW MONTHS IT WAS CONCLUDED WE SHOULD INCLUDE ALL 30,000 ROTARY CLUBS.

PRESIDENT ANGELO LOUMBAS PROVIDED THE LEGAL EXPERTISE FOR US TO INCORPORATE AND SEEK APPROVAL FROM ROTARY INTERNATIONAL.

IN OCTOBER 2003, ROTARY INTERNATIONAL APPROVED THE ROTARY GLOBAL HISTORY FELLOWSHIP.

WE CURRENTLY SERVE, FREE OF CHARGE, 80,000 ROTARIANS EVERY MONTH. THE WEBSITE CONTAINS THOUSANDS OF ARTICLES ON THE HISTORY OF ROTARY COMPILED AND ARCHIVED IN OVER 4,000 PAGES.

RGHF HAS A BOARD COMPRISED OF 44 MEMBERS WHICH INCLUDES 34 ZONES THAT MEET ONLINE MONTHLY OVER A THREE DAY PERIOD.

WE HAVE 15 HISTORIANS, 10 WEBMASTERS AND 363 MEMBERS, ALL VOLUNTEERS.

CYNDI DEBOCK WAS THE ROTARY INTERNATIONAL REFERENCE ARCHIVIST AT THAT TIME AND SHE WAS CONTACTED ALMOST DAILY AS SHE HELPED US PULL TOGETHER THE HISTORY OF ROTARY.

SHE NOW SERVES ROTARY INTERNATIONAL AS ORDER MANAGEMENT SUPERVISOR FOR RI PUBLICATIONS ORDER SERVICES. SHE SUPERVISES THE ORDER DESK STAFF, WHICH IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE PUBLICATIONS DISTRIBUTION DEPARTMENT. SHE SUPPORTS RI STAFF, ROTARIANS AND NON ROTARIANS BY PROVIDING READING AND VISUAL MATERIALS TO THOSE WHO SERVE OTHERS THROUGH ROTARY.

RGHF HAS INDUCTED HER INTO THE 1905 SOCIETY IN 2003 AND ALSO MADE HER A PAUL HARRIS FELLOW AT THAT TIME.

TODAY WE ARE HONORING HER FOR ALL OF HER SUPPORT TO RGHF BY MAKING HER AN HONORARY MEMBER.

PRESIDENT ANGELO, WILL YOU PRESENT HER PIN TO DISTRICT GOVERNOR DR. JIM CZERWIONKA, WHO WILL PIN HER.

THANK YOU CYNDI FOR YOU MANY CONTRIBUTIONS TO THIS EXCITING FELLOWSHIP.
