Message from RGHF founder Jack Selway

The answer to the question, "how does history help Rotary?", is found on over 3,000 pages of Rotary Global History starting at www.rghf.org where it is our belief that knowledge of Rotary Global History will encourage membership retention. In the same breath there are those entering many fields of vocation or avocation who will stay with their chosen fields when they understand the roots, the formation, the values, and, yes, the history of their chosen path. We have created www.historylearningcenter.org to help members of Rotary begin their journey. However, the fine work of Rotary Founder Paul P. Harris is another good starting place. Virtually everything Paul wrote or spoke is found at www.whatpaulharriswrote.org

I have been studying the Global History of Rotary since my early days at Rotary Club of San Francisco, 1908, where history was very important to the legacy of that club. However, after beginning Rotary Global History with a list of the first fifty clubs www.rotaryfirstfifty.org in 2000, I really began to understand the value of our collective past, present, and future as leaders in bringing peace and understanding to the world around us.

Rotary is not a political or religious organization, however Harris was a deeply religious man and an RI president from Canada was a minister http://www.rotaryfirst100.org/presidents/1917pidgeon/index.htm so, with that let me add my personal story of the value of history. (Again, this is with all due respect to all persons’ religions those of no religion.)

I had been a wandering part time sort-of Roman Catholic until factors lead to the necessity to make a major change in my life. So, I studied this religion with the same passion I had explored Rotary Global History. I learned from the writings, the teachers, and the community, much as RGHF approaches Rotary Global History. The transformation was, over time, remarkable and life changing. Knowing what I now know, it’s highly unlikely that I’ll ever stray far from my chosen faith and my life is better for it.

Wouldn’t that be the same for Rotarians who study the writings, community, and teachers of Rotary? Today, I speak on this subject whenever called upon and hope that I can bring more to understand the values of Rotary Global History in a world greatly in need of our service to others.

Jack Selway, January 2009

Recognizing Rotary histories found on the internet, was conceived by webmaster Greg Barlow, Malaysia. Each month, as part of our " Rotary Global History Fellowship Day" initiative, RGHF will recognize a club, district, or other Rotary organization by highlighting their history on our forum. www.rghfforum.org all visitors can read these, and all RGHF members can comment. This acknowledgment will be included in a " Rotary Global History Fellowship Day" feature sent to our large mailing list each month.

If your club or Rotary organization would like to have your history considered, simply send a message at www.historycomment.org
